The English Market is one of the biggest attractions in Cork. Covered in history, the market has been trading since 1788 and is still as important in the daily life for the locals.
Visitors come for the local foods, aromas and atmosphere as farmers, fishmongers, butchers and others have their finest goods on show.
It’s a food lovers paradise, and wandering throught he maze of stalls will be a dream for those interested.
You can find just about anything here from smoked salmon, farmhouse cheeses, fresh fish, organic meat and vegetables, breads, along with some more indulgent sweet treats.
The English market has had its fair share of turmoil over the years. In the aftermatch of the Irish revellion in 1978, soldiers looted goods from suppliers entering the city, requiring armed guards to maintain order.
During the Great Famine, even as thousands died, the market remained open which allowed the poor to access provisions.
Despite economic depressions, proposals to demolish the market and multiple fires – including the one that destroyed the Princes Street section in 19080, the English Market survived ans has served as a vital hub for the Cork community.
