CORK JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018

The Cork Jazz Festival is an annual music festival held in Cork City, Ireland.  This year the festival will run from the 25th-29th October 2018.

Did you know it is Ireland’s biggest and longest established jazz event and has taken place annually since 1978!  Each year the festival attracts up to a thousand musicians  and many thousands of fans to the city for a feast of jazz of all kinds.

For the first time ever, the weekend will kick off with a fantastic carnival-like ‘Dia De Los Muertos’ Jazz Parade on Thursday evening, 25th October.  This bright and colourful spectacle will roam through the streets of Cork bringing with it the alluring dance of the macabre. This deadly display, is a nod to Mexico’s famous ‘Day of the Dead’ Parade, the perfect start to Halloween season!

The Guinness Cork Jazz Festival line-up features Grammy award-winning Maria Schneider and her Orchestra for their first-ever Irish appearance, the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama, celebrated US Jazz singer and composer Nnenna Freelon, UK soul songstress Laura Mvula, Chicago’s Hypnotic Brass Ensemble as well as Stanley Clarke, Billy Childs Ensemble, Billy Cobham, Fred Hersch, T.S. Monk, Donny McCaslin, Belfast’s jazz evangelist Linley Hamilton, Frank Vignola’s Hot Jazz Trio and Pablo Ziegler Trio.

It’s a lively and sociable festival, with lots of events – jazz and otherwise – taking place at pubs, theatres and other locations across the city. However you don’t have to be a Jazz aficionado to enjoy this festival, a series of free “fringe” activities, all aimed at extending the whole experience for locals and visitors. The perfect opportunity to see Cork city come alive and get a taste for the jazz culture!

Lee View House

In 2017 the management team of the Montenotte hotel decided to embark on uncovering the history of our unique hotel. Having limited knowledge on its previous residence we commissioned a local historian, Margaret Lantry, recommended by UCC for her knowledge of Cork’s Merchant princes. The research project took over 12 months but the history uncovered and the stories told were remarkable.

The research documents, the background history, to the houses and the hotels on the site preliminary research was conducted involving the examination of the land records including ordinance survey, name books and letters, the tithe allotment books and valuation office records. The 1901 and 1911 censuses and Cork city street directories were also examined as were street directories since 1867. Other sources used where newspapers for mentions of the Lee view hotel and country club hotel in order to find out more about their history.
